Most visited national parks
Published on

I was poking around the Internet and discovered the government's site where statistics can be found on national parks.  Just for grins I went through the list of parks and pulled out all parks that had greater than 3 million "recreation visits" in a year (the data is from 2005).

California   Golden Gate NRA   13,602,629
North Carolina   Blue Ridge PKWY   11,087,192
Virginia   George Washington MEM PKWY   7,284,165
Virginia   Blue Ridge PKWY   6,795,375
New York   Gateway NRA   6,635,482
Nevada   Lake Mead NRA   5,769,329
Tennessee   Great Smoky Mountains NP   5,147,787
District of Columbia   National World War II Memorial   4,410,379
Arizona   Grand Canyon NP   4,401,522
Mississippi   Natchez Trace PKWY   4,385,826
New York   Statue of Liberty NM   4,235,595
North Carolina   Great Smoky Mountains NP   4,044,690
California   San Francisco Maritime NHP   3,976,056
Pennsylvania   Independence NHP   3,951,073
District of Columbia   Vietnam Veterans MEM   3,799,968
Massachusetts   Cape Code NS   3,712,812
District of Columbia   Lincoln Memorial   3,638,806
New Jersey   Delaware Water Gap NRA   3,587,107
New York   Castle Clinton NM   3,487,307
Virginia   Colonial NHP   3,338,695
California   Yosemite NP   3,304,144
District of Columbia   Korean War Veterans Memorial NMEM   3,214,467
Washington   Olympic NP   3,142,774

BTW, if you're curious about the designations.  Here's the key:

NRA   National Recreation Area
NP   National Park
NM   National Monument
NHP   National Historic Park
NMEM   National Memorial
MEM   Memorial
PKWY   Parkway

One of the things that jumped out at me was what is considered a national park. I believe all the most highly visited parks are actually highways. I assume that's the case for Golden Gate NRA.  I know it's the case for the parkways (PKWY). I'm curious whether the states get more funding based on these statistics or whether it is the other way around.  They generate more funding because they charge people who drive on these highways.

New York   Gateway NRA   6,635,482
Nevada   Lake Mead NRA   5,769,329
District of Columbia   National World War II Memorial   4,410,379
Arizona   Grand Canyon NP   4,401,522
New York   Statue of Liberty NM   4,235,595
California   San Francisco Maritime NHP   3,976,056
Pennsylvania   Independence NHP   3,951,073
District of Columbia   Vietnam Veterans MEM   3,799,968
Massachusetts   Cape Code NS   3,712,812
District of Columbia   Lincoln Memorial   3,638,806
New Jersey   Delaware Water Gap NRA   3,587,107
New York   Castle Clinton NM   3,487,307
Virginia   Colonial NHP   3,338,695
California   Yosemite NP   3,304,144
District of Columbia   Korean War Veterans Memorial NMEM   3,214,467
Washington   Olympic NP   3,142,774

If you pull out the parkways, the list is not all that intuitive.  For example, I knew Lake Mead was popular but who would guess it would rank higher than the memorials in DC?  There must not be an accurate way to determine the true number of visits.  Come to think of it, last time I was in DC I don't remember paying to see the WWII memorial.

For the Golden Gate NRA it includes Alcatraz and Muir woods and a bunch of other stuff, so it doesn't really seem unreasonable to have so many visitors without traffic on the actual bridge. The things that are counted towards the number are listed for each park off of the same site you link to. It doesn't look like it includes traffic on the bridge. For the WWII memorial, the take samples for 15 minutes sixteen times a day to estimate the number of visitors

Thanks Bret, that makes a lot more sense.
