Bruneau Dunes in January
Published on

This weekend I went out to Bruneau Dunes State Park early on Saturday morning with a friend to practice up on a little photography.  If you're not familiar with Bruneau, it's an unusual place with very large sand dunes in southwestern Idaho.  Unfortunately, there was some cloud cover so we missed the sunrise opportunity.

The wind was howling and it was around freezing (w/o wind chill) so we wandered around and took a few close up shots.

After a couple of hours we got some patchy sunlight so I was able to get a few dunes shots.

Around 10:30 an extremely dark cloud came in from the northwest.  At first, this was awesome because we could get some contrast of the dunes against the sky.  The picture below doesn't really give justice to the weather.  I absolutely got sand blasted taking this picture.  I'm sure it was great on my camera and tripod!

After having the first couple of layers of my face grinded down by sand we headed back toward the car.  I got one last shot in which you see below.

About 10 seconds after I snapped this shot it was a complete blizzard.  Snow was coming in horizontally and the place was blanketed in less than 5 minutes.

What a wild trip!

Great stuff, I didn't even know they had sand dunes in Idaho (I mean it makes sense, I just didn't actually know the fact.) Colorado has some pretty good ones too, the Great Sand Dunes National Monument (I have some pics on Flickr at http://www.flickr.com/photos/snwbeast/sets/72157594309404381/ if you'd like to check them out.) Most of your shots look like they could have been taken down here! -- C

Curtis, you have some great shots in your Flickr photos! Some of your shots do an excellent job of bringing out the texture of the sand. I showed them to my friend Steve who took photos at Bruneau Dunes with me and he liked them as well. Keep up the good work!
